Graded exams give your practice a clear target and a recognised result. The four main boards all run graded exams, but they suit different players.
The boards at a glance
Trinity College London
Offers both classical guitar and Rock & Pop exams, so it suits classical players and contemporary players alike.
ABRSM
Best known for classical music. A natural fit if you play nylon-string classical guitar and want a traditional pathway.
London College of Music (LCM)
Covers classical guitar as well as contemporary styles, with flexible syllabus options.
Rockschool
Focused on contemporary music. A strong choice for electric and acoustic players who love rock, pop and blues.
How to choose
- Your style: classical players usually lean towards ABRSM, Trinity or LCM; electric and pop players towards Rockschool or Trinity Rock & Pop.
- Your goal: if the exam is for school, college or a music course, check which boards they recognise.
- The pieces: look through the set pieces. You will practise them for months, so pick music you enjoy.
Syllabuses change, so we always check the current one together before you enter. Find out more about guitar exam preparation.
