How to read guitar tabs: a complete beginner's guide

Guitar tab (tablature) shows you which string and which fret to play. Learn how to read guitar tabs in a few minutes: the lines, the numbers, chords, and the symbols for bends, slides and hammer-ons.

What is guitar tab?

Tab is a way of writing guitar music using strings and frets instead of standard notation. It is the fastest way to learn riffs, solos and songs, and you do not need to read music to use it.

The six lines are the strings

Each horizontal line is a string. The top line is the thinnest string (high E) and the bottom line is the thickest (low E). It looks upside down at first: picture looking down at the guitar on your lap.

The numbers are frets

A number tells you which fret to press on that string, and 0 means play the string open. Read from left to right, like text. This ascending A minor pentatonic run starts on the 5th fret of the low E string:

Reading chords in tab

Numbers stacked vertically are played together. This is a G major chord, the same shape as in the beginner chords guide:

What tab does not tell you

Most tabs show no rhythm. Listen to the recording while you read: use the tab for where to play and your ears for when. Tabs online are often written by fans and can be wrong, so if something sounds off, trust your ear.

How to Read Guitar Tabs: FAQ

Is the top line of guitar tab the high or low E string?

The top line is the high E string (the thinnest) and the bottom line is the low E string (the thickest).

What does 0 mean in guitar tab?

Play that string open, without pressing any fret.

What does 7 mean in guitar tabs?

Press the 7th fret of the string the number sits on. Every number in tab is a fret number.

What do h and p mean in guitar tab?

h is a hammer-on: pick the first note, then press the higher fret firmly without picking again. p is a pull-off, the reverse: pull the finger off to sound the lower note.

Should I learn tab or sheet music?

Tab is enough for most guitarists playing rock, pop and Bollywood. Sheet music helps for classical guitar and graded exams, and both can be learned in lessons.
