How Much Do Online Guitar and Piano Lessons Cost?

Music lesson prices vary more than almost anything else you can buy. The same 30 minutes can cost less than a cinema ticket or more than a meal out. Here is what drives the price, what published rates looked like when this was written (October 2026), and how to get good value.

What lessons cost: published examples

These are prices that teachers and platforms were showing publicly at the time of writing. Treat them as a guide to the range, not a quote:

  • Online tutor marketplaces: Lessonface listed private guitar lessons from $27.50 for 30 minutes, and Superprof described its online guitar tutors as averaging around $36 an hour.
  • US local averages: Thumbtack put the average piano lesson at about $60, with most between $50 and $60.
  • Big-city studios: a Los Angeles music school quoted $70 to $100 an hour for guitar ($35 to $50 for 30 minutes), and a New York guitar school charged $95 for a single 45-minute lesson.
  • The full spread: one music lesson marketplace summed it up as anywhere from $30 an hour to more than $150.

Rates in India are very different. See what guitar lessons cost in India.

Why prices vary so much

  • Experience and results. A teacher with a long track record, exam passes and strong student playing can charge more, and often should.
  • Location. Studio rent and living costs push big-city prices up. Online teachers are not tied to one city.
  • Lesson length. 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons are all common.
  • Format. Private lessons cost more per hour than group classes, which cost more than pre-recorded courses.
  • Packages. Monthly plans usually cost less per lesson than paying session by session.

Are online lessons cheaper than in-person lessons?

Often, but not always. Online teachers have no studio to rent, and you spend nothing on travel, so the total cost of each lesson usually falls. The bigger saving is time: a 30-minute online lesson takes 30 minutes of your day, not 90. Online lessons also let you choose a teacher anywhere, including places where lessons cost less.

What you should not give up to save money is live feedback. A cheap pre-recorded course and a live lesson are different products. See online vs in-person lessons.

Do piano lessons cost more than guitar lessons?

From the same teacher, usually not. The bigger difference is the instrument: you can start guitar on a modest acoustic, while piano needs at least a keyboard with full-size, touch-sensitive keys. See what you need to start piano.

How to find affordable lessons that still work

  • Take shorter lessons. Thirty minutes is plenty for beginners and children.
  • Go fortnightly once you are settled, with a clear practice plan in between. See how often to take lessons.
  • Use a monthly package instead of single sessions.
  • Combine a course with occasional lessons. A self-paced course covers the material; a live lesson every few weeks checks your technique.
  • Use free material for the basics: the free guitar guides and printable PDFs cost nothing.

Can cheap lessons get good results?

Yes, if the teacher can teach. Price on its own tells you very little. Check what matters: a plan, specific feedback, a practice goal every week, and students who improve. A cheap lesson with none of those is the expensive option, because you pay for it in wasted months. See how to choose a teacher.

Are free trial lessons worth it?

Yes, as long as you treat a free first lesson as a sample rather than a decision. Many teachers offer one; on Superprof, for example, many tutors offer the first session free. Use it to check three things: does the teacher ask about your goals, do you leave with something you can practise, and do you understand what the next month would look like?

Package deals, discounts and guarantees

Packages are the usual discount: a block of lessons or a monthly plan costs less per lesson than paying each time. Money-back guarantees are rare with independent teachers, because the lesson time has already been given. What you should expect instead is clear written terms: what happens to unused lessons, how much notice you need to reschedule, and how to stop. See fair cancellation policies.
