The best first style is the music you love most. Motivation will carry you through the hard early weeks far better than any “correct” starting point.
A quick guide to the main styles
- Acoustic pop and Bollywood. Open chords and strumming, perfect for singing along. A great, practical start. See Bollywood guitar lessons.
- Rock. Power chords and riffs on electric guitar. Fast, fun results. See rock guitar lessons.
- Blues. A simple structure that teaches rhythm, bends and improvising early on.
- Classical. Nylon strings, fingerstyle and reading music. The most disciplined path, with strong technique.
- Jazz and funk. Rich harmony and tight rhythm. Usually best after the basics.
Acoustic or electric?
Follow the sound you love. If your favourite songs are strummed, start acoustic. If they are built on riffs and solos, start electric. The skills transfer either way.
The foundations every style shares
Whatever you choose, you will learn the same core skills: clean fretting, steady rhythm, smooth chord changes and an understanding of how chords and scales fit together. Get these right and you can move between styles whenever you like.
Good first songs
Look for songs with two to four open chords and a steady strum. A teacher can pick songs in your favourite style at the right level, or simplify a song you love so you can play it now.
