Every beginner asks the same few questions. Here are straight answers.
Why do my fingertips hurt?
Pressing steel strings is new for your skin. Soreness in the first few weeks is normal, and it fades as calluses form. To make it easier: practise in short sessions several times a day, press only as hard as you need for a clean note, and make sure your guitar’s strings are not set too high. Sharp pain in your wrist or hand is different: stop and check your posture.
How do I build finger strength?
Try the “spider” exercise: place one finger per fret and play each note in turn, slowly, across all six strings and back. A few minutes a day builds strength, independence and accuracy.
How do I tune my guitar?
Standard tuning, from the thickest string to the thinnest, is E A D G B E. A clip-on tuner or a free tuner app is the easiest way. Tune every time you play.
Do I need to read music?
Not to start. Chord charts and tab get you playing quickly. Reading music becomes useful later, especially for graded exams and classical guitar.
Pick or fingers?
Both are worth learning. A pick suits strumming and rock; fingers suit fingerstyle and classical. Most beginners start with a pick for strumming.
Common beginner mistakes
- Pressing far too hard.
- Gripping the neck with the thumb.
- Practising fast instead of accurately.
- Skipping rhythm and timing.
- Learning only bits of songs, never full songs.
