Most students who feel stuck are not short of talent or time. They are short of a plan. Thirty focused minutes a day will move you further than two unplanned hours at the weekend.
The routine
1. Warm up (5 minutes)
Slow finger exercises, one finger per fret, up and down the neck. Keep your fingers close to the strings and press only as hard as the note needs.
2. Technique (8 minutes)
Pick one skill for the week: alternate picking, a scale shape, bends or a fingerstyle pattern. Practise it with a metronome at a speed you can play cleanly, and only nudge the tempo up once it feels easy.
3. Chord changes (7 minutes)
Choose two chords you find awkward and switch between them for a minute at a time. Count how many clean changes you make. That number is your progress, and it climbs faster than you expect.
4. Rhythm (5 minutes)
Strum one chord along with a metronome or drum loop. Rhythm is what makes a song sound like music, and it is the skill self-taught players most often skip.
5. Play music (5 minutes)
End with a song you enjoy, start to finish, without stopping for mistakes. This is where the rest of the session turns into real playing.
Practise efficiently at home
- Practise at the same time each day so it becomes a habit.
- Keep your guitar on a stand, not in its case. If it is easy to grab, you will play more.
- Put your phone in another room.
- Stop before you are exhausted, so you look forward to the next session.
Track your progress
Write down what you worked on and the tempo you reached. Record yourself once a week. You will hear things you miss while playing, and in a month you will have proof of how far you have come.
The 80/20 rule for guitar practice
About 20 percent of your practice produces 80 percent of your progress. That 20 percent is usually the hardest bar of a song played slowly until it is easy, and the fundamentals: rhythm, clean changes and relaxed hands. Give those your freshest minutes, before the song you already know.
Not sure what to put in each slot? That is exactly what lessons are for. In a private session we build this routine around your level and the music you want to play.
