You can, and the instruments help each other more than you might think. The key is the order you take them in.
How they connect
- Guitar and ukulele. Standard ukulele tuning matches the top four strings of a guitar with a capo at the fifth fret, so many chord shapes carry straight across, sounding in a different key.
- Guitar and piano. The piano lays music out in a straight line, which makes scales, intervals and chords easy to see. Those ideas then make the guitar fretboard far less mysterious.
The challenge
Your practice time gets split. Two instruments at half the time each means slower progress on both, at least at first. Each also needs its own physical technique, which takes time to build.
A sensible order
- Start with the instrument you are most excited about.
- Build the basics for a few months: comfortable technique, a handful of songs and a regular routine.
- Then add the second, and notice how much the theory transfers.
Learning both here
I teach guitar and piano with the same approach, so the theory and ear training you build on one instrument supports the other. If you are torn between instruments, tell me what music you love and I will suggest where to begin.
