Yes. It is never too late to start guitar. I teach complete beginners of all ages, and adults often progress faster than they expect.
Why adults learn well
- You choose to be there. Motivation is your biggest advantage.
- You understand practice. Adults can follow a plan and see why each step matters.
- You know what you like. Learning the songs you love keeps you going.
The main challenges are time and patience with yourself. Adults often expect to be good immediately. Give yourself a few months, and practise little and often.
Guitar for adults: where to start
- Pick a goal: a song, a style, or playing with friends.
- Get a comfortable, playable guitar. See choosing a beginner guitar.
- Find a teacher who adapts to adults, so lessons fit around work and family.
- Protect a short daily slot, even 15 minutes.
What about children?
Most children can start around six or seven, often with a smaller 3/4 size guitar or nylon strings, which are kinder to young fingers. Short, playful lessons work best at first, building attention span and technique together.
Older learners
If stiff joints are a concern, nylon strings, a well set-up guitar and shorter sessions help a lot. Playing music is also a wonderful way to keep your mind and hands active.
What is the best age to start guitar?
For children, around six or seven, when their hands can press the strings comfortably; younger children often start on a smaller guitar or a ukulele. For everyone else, the best age is now. There is no upper limit.
Online lessons for kids and adults
Both work well online. Young children need a parent nearby for the first lessons, to help with the camera and tuning, and do best with shorter lessons. Adults can usually manage the setup themselves and gain most from the flexibility. See lessons for kids and lessons for adults.
Is guitar a skill or a talent?
A skill. Some people start with a better ear or more natural rhythm, but every part of guitar playing, from clean chords to improvising, is learned through practice. What looks like talent is usually years of practice nobody saw.
Whatever your age, beginner lessons start from exactly where you are.
